WHO ARE WE?

Simply the best – that’s the Sea Cadets. Whether you're male or female, it's the number one youth charity based on Britain’s oldest Armed Service – the Royal Navy. And right here in your local unit at Woking, we can fill your weekend or holiday with an action-packed programme - from boating, sailing and canoeing through to adventure training and other sports. You’ll make new friends and be part of a great team. You can join as a Sea Cadet if you are aged 12-18; or as a Junior Cadet if you are 10 or 11, and start learning the Navy way of life. Earn promotion up to Cadet Petty Officer - really the tops!

OUR AIMS

To give you the best fun you’ve ever had – with a serious side too. Along the way we’ll teach you life skills from cookery to computers, engineering, navigation and the art of seamanship.

TRAINING – GET FIT THE FUN WAY

Fit for life. Through getting involved in our outdoor and indoor activities, you will be able to make new friends, show your chums your new-found skills, and put your talents to the test. There are plenty of opportunities to get some adventure into your life: taking a trip on a real Royal Navy warship; sailing before the mast aboard the Sea Cadets' square-rigged flagship TS Royalist; or flying in a Royal Navy helicopter. With around 400 units nationwide, the Sea Cadets Corps offers plenty of scope to see other parts of the country and to learn different skills on specialist courses at our training centres.

THERE’S LOADS TO DO – THE CHOICE IS YOURS

When you drop in at our Unit, you’ll find lots of friendly faces waiting to welcome you aboard. The officers and instructors are all highly trained to make sure you enjoy every aspect of Sea Cadet life – a cut above the local youth club!

So if you’re bored with computer games and the telly, why not try a taste of the real thing? Don’t miss out on a chance to make the most of your quality time – get a bit of the action §.

SOME OF OUR ACTIVITIES

How many other organisations could boast a fleet of boats complete with Royal Yachting Association qualified instructors for an outlay of £1.50 per session (there are two sessions per week)? Apart from seamanship & navigation, signals & communications, dinghy and cruiser sailing, rowing, canoeing, power boating, boat repairs and instrucion on ships & the sea, we also offer First Aid training to HSE standards, engineering, drill, shooting, Duke of Edinburgh Award, adventure training, leadership training, sport and games.

WHY DO PEOPLE JOIN THE SEA CADETS?

Because they want to do something worthwhile.  Because they want to belong to the best youth movement around.  Because they want to meet the challenge of the future with the motto Ready Aye Ready. Please do come along with your parents to see what we get up to §.

MORE ABOUT OUR UNIT

photo The Woking & District Sea Cadets Unit's HQ is called TS Dianthus ('TS' is short for ‘Training Ship’), named after HMS Dianthus (K95).

At present we have around 30 cadets and 15 members of uniformed and civilian staff. We attract the sort of young people who are interested in learning maritime skills and traditions, in serving their community and in having 'serious fun' with their 'shipmates'. Some cadets, upon reaching the age of 18, choose to volunteer as Sea Cadet instructors or probationary Petty Officers.

While the cadets pay a weekly subscription of £3 and junior cadets 75p to help cover the cost of running our unit, funding is largely provided by individual and corporate sponsors from the local community. The TS Dianthus's Parent and Supporters’ Association (PSA) helps raise funds for the Unit and also runs the Unit Mess.

Parade hours are 7.00pm - 9.00pm Mondays and Thursdays. Whether you're a potential cadet, adult volunteer, or fundraiser, why not stop by during parade hours and see what we're all about? Or you can chat to Lt John Bray, Commanding Officer, on 01483 768323. Email Lt Bray at commandingofficer@wokingseacadets.org.uk. The committee can be contacted on committee@wokingseacadets.org.uk
